Contrast in Place and Paint
Opening Reception:
Saturday, May 8 from 4 -7 pm
Exhibit continues through June 12, 2010
Dorothea Barrick’s plein air paintings, Contrast in Place and Paint, beautifully express her appreciation of her environment. The colors seem to leap spontaneously from the landscape onto the canvas where they invite the viewer to share her travels. This exhibit contrasts her experiences painting in the mountains of Fairfield, Pennsylvania against the landscape of New Mexico. Her rich, fluid brush strokes echo the trees and flowers as they bend to the eastern winds. Just as expressive are the bold brush strokes for the hard surfaces of the rocks and mountains under the intense southwest sun. These juxtaposed elements create dazzling motion on the flat surface of the canvas, which she elegantly captures and translates for the viewer.
Teaching has also captured Ms. Barrick‘s interest. She started the art department at St. Mary’s College in 1973 and has taught in various colleges throughout Maryland. At present she teaches workshops at the Frederick Community College, Frederick, MD, the Harrisburg Area Community College, Gettysburg, PA, and Hood College, Frederick, MD.
Ms. Barrick received an MFA in 1967 and a BFA in 1965 from the Maryland Institute of Art, Baltimore, MD.

June 6th, 2010 at 6:13 amSo powerful and rich- and so beautiful.
I wish that I could be there to see them.
I very much hope she will paint the landscapes of the hidden heart of France one day.
